Day 16: Legal Ethical Societal Issues in MIL

The sixteenth day of class for the second semester for Media and Information Literacy '17-'18. Our teacher, Mr. Rodel Mansilla Opianadiscussed more about Issues in Media and Information Literacy.

Which ones do you understand? Which are the ones you don't know?
I were able to understand everything. I have knowledge about them but I think that I could use additional information.

What possible dangers and issues of unguarded use of the internet are depicted in the picture?
Everyone unaware of the dangers and its possible effects will be vulnerable and be exposed to the issue. They could get involved in different activities that could be illegal or immoral.

Which of these issues have happened to you or to your friends? Why did they happen?
I had a friend that had his profile hacked by a friend. It happened because he left his facebook open on the lab and let his classmate use it. The one who used the account sent curse words to other people.

After the discussion, the class was divided into four groups and I was assigned to Group #3: Computer Addiction. Here is the work of my group:

Case 3: Computer Addiction

From the research, do boys and girls share the same Internet usage? Explain your answer. Cite statistics or data.

No, because it was stated in the article that out of 10 teenagers four of them believe that they are addicted to internet and most of them are girls. The survey, which questioned more than 2,000 secondary school pupils aged 11 to 17, found that 39 per cent believe they are addicted to the internet. The figure was higher among girls at 46 per cent, whereas 36 per cent of boys thought they were addicted. The poll found that girls spent more time chatting to friends on social networks while boys were more absorbed by computer games.

Cite one real life example in your school or community of teenagers who have experienced computer addiction. What happen them? Have they recovered from their addiction?

One real life example for computer addiction is my cousin who addicted on playing LOL or League of Legends. When we were in elementary, my cousin Justin Castro use internet only just for his assignment and project purposes. He doesn't stay at the computer too long because he said to me one time that he don't want to be addicted to computers. Also he found out that using computers too much would cause health problems. After graduation of elementary, high school is the next chapter of his life. In this chapter his life using computers changed because of the game League of Legends. He was influenced by his new friends in high school and because of his curiosity; he tried to play it once. But suddenly after that one try, he never stops playing this game. He became addicted to it. His mother or rather my aunt once told me that he didn't eat for one day because of playing consecutive games of league of legends. With this kind of act, his grades was continuously decreasing and most often he always play the game first before doing his requirements at school. Even if his mother always reminds him regarding in his act, Justin still not listen and became really addicted to the game and with the use of computer.

For now, I see the improvement of my cousin regarding on his addiction. He gets back to his old self now bit by bit and his grades starts to improve since he stop playing the League of Legends.
