Day 1: Weekly Interaction Log with Information Providers
The first day of class for the second semester for Media and Information Literacy '17-'18. Our teacher, Mr. Rodel Mansilla Opiana, discussed about information providers. He told us to create a table showing the media used and for how long it was used. My work can be seen in the table below:
Looking at the table, I can clearly see that I spend a lot of my time using Facebook. I know this since I usually use the messenger to communicate with my family and friends. Using this, I can gain information about different topics. I use YouTube, Twitter and the other media or information providers mainly for entertainment.
The role of media in our daily lives are usually to gain information or knowledge. It is also used for people's personal entertainment.
Media Literacy, is not only being able to read or write on media platforms but it also includes the ability to access, analyze, and evaluate it. It is used to improve the users' knowledge by giving them relevant information.
The teacher also gave us some questions to be answered at home:
In your opinion, what makes an individual literate in media and information?
What activities or habits do you practice which illustrate media and information literacy? Give at least three examples.
My answers to the written activity
Truthfully, I think that having a reviewed, reliable source of information makes an individual literate. Knowing what happened, how it happened, why it happened, are some questions that a literate individual should be able to answer accurately.
Activities to practice media and information literacy are used to make people engage, understand, inquire, and think about the subject being talked about. Some examples are:
• Newspaper or articles
• Posting on social media sites
• Texting or emailing people
Being media and information literate is important especially in this Technological Era in which information can be found in multiple places. We should know how to give the correct information in a manner that it wouldn’t be misunderstood and to take in information from sources that are trusted and reliable. Since fake news also circulates around, you might want to talk or learn more about the subject before deciding on what to believe in.
In some cases, there are people who are there during the event that could spread the news. They might be witnesses but it doesn’t mean that they are right since they could include what they were feeling and exaggerate the event.
I really recommend to go to the news sites like ABS-CBN since it is said that they have reliable information but it still doesn’t mean that they are always right. Well, since they are experts, it is considered a smart move to believe them instead of what we can hear on the streets.
