Day 5: The Evolution of Traditional to New Media (Timeline Draft)

The fifth day of class for the second semester for Media and Information Literacy '17-'18. Our teacher, Mr. Rodel Mansilla Opiana, discussed about an activity about the evolution of media.

We were asked to create a timeline and was given time to search, think, and write about it. I created a draft of what my timeline could be:

2001: Cassette Tapes

2002: Coloring Books, Paper and Pen

2003: Storybooks, Colored Pictures

2004: Television, Notebooks

2005: School textbooks

2006: Computer

2007: Telephone

2008: Newspaper

2009: Cellphone, Radio

2010: Magazines (Kzone), Internet, Yahoo

2011: Facebook, USB, Camera

2012: YouTube, Gmail, Skype

2013: Twitter, CD/DVD

2014: Laptop

2015: Edmodo

2016: Instagram

2017: Snapchat,  Hard Drive, Pinterest

I am still in the process of creating a timeline in the site. I will add descriptions and pictures with it.

While doing the activity, I realized that I have been exposed to media from the start. It improves over time, having better functions and capabilities, as the media tries to help in making people's life easier. Even if media is used to help, it might be bad for one's health if overused. We must still take a break from using media and look at the beauty of the world.

Update (23 Nov 2017)

I am finalizing my draft and thought that a yearly timeline could be a hassle since some topics could be simplified into one. For example, Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter could be categorized as "social media".

My revisions for my timeline is can be seen below:

2001-2006: Television. I used to watch films or moving pictures while listening to the sound making me learn about what is being shown on the television. An example of it is a video of nursery rhymes.

2006-2007: Newspaper. I read the comics section of the newspaper especially the kids edition of the Daily Inquirer. It made me have information about the current events. It also taught me different kinds of words.

2007-2008: Telephones. I used the telephone to communicate with my parents or classmates. Using it, I can gain information from others or share to them what is happening around me.

2008-2009: Computers. I used the computer to search for things I wanted to know. Using a computer, I am able to draw, play, and store information.

2009-2010: Cellphones. To communicate with my parents or guardian, they gave me a phone. I used it for its intended purpose, taking pictures or videos, recording audio, and many more. I really like a cellphone's multi function.

2010-2011: Online Games. My friends and cousins introduced me to sites like Y8. It is a site with a lot of games which made my knowledge improve by solving puzzle or strategy games.

2011-2012: Social Media. My parents created my accounts for me so that I will be able to communicate with them and other people using the internet. I also obtained information and shared information by using the social media.

2012-2013: Books and Novels. Due to my love for books, my relatives gives me books as a Christmas gift. I read all of them and probably gained useful information or lessons from it.

2013-2014Online Films. There are many films. Some have moral lessons, some are educational, some are to widen one's imagination, and many more. It has a large influence on me since I watched a lot of movies.

2014-2015: Mobile Games. Unlike online games, mobile games are easier to access because you will only need your phone. It allowed me to improve my skills by playing strategy games.

2015-2017: Laptop. My parents bought me a laptop for educational purposes. I now use it for storing information and creating outputs.
