Day 4: The Evolution of Traditional to New Media

The fourth day of class for the second semester for Media and Information Literacy '17-'18. Our teacher, Mr. Rodel Mansilla Opiana, discussed about the evolution of media.

First, we had a lesson about the four ages of media: pre-industrial, industrial, electronic, and information. The teacher gave an activity about it. He asked us to create a table and give examples to his questions. My answer can be seen below:

We can see that there are similarities in the uses. We can conclude from it that some media have many roles and purposes. It will depend on how the people will use it.

He also gave us an assignment to be done at home and passed at Edmodo:

Evo1
Given the available media that we now have in the world, what are its roles and functions in a democratic society?

There are many functions for media but it is mainly used for information giving and sharing. For me, in this democratic society, some of its role and functions are:
  • Announcing Important Events
  • Give Entertainment
  • Medium in Sharing or Giving Information

There are many more other possible roles and functions since the media is wide and is still advancing. It is nice since we get to know information from other places. The only problem is if it was a fake or opinionated news, we might get the wrong impression of the event.

In what way does media affect your life (personal, professional, academic, social, others)?

Media affects my life a lot since I use it daily. I could gain information or have fun in using the media. I could also communicate with my family, friends and classmates by using it. In academics, I can use the media to search for specific information to answer my questions.

To summarize, media affects my life greatly. It is already like a part of my life. Scrolling through social media, using messenger to chat, and many more. There are just a lot of things one can do while using the media.
